Casey Kasem’s Health Declining

LOS ANGELES: The daughter of ailing radio personality Casey Kasem was granted conservatorship over his health care on Friday, as a family representative said the deejay "won't be with us much longer." Kerri Kasem will oversee the care given to her 82-year-old father said Danny Deraney, a representative for the deejay's three children from his first marriage. The deejay's health care and visitation rights has been at the center of a legal tussle between his children from his first marriage - Kerri, Julie and Mike - and his second wife, Jean Kasem, with whom he has one child, Liberty. Kasem was admitted to a Washington state hospital earlier this week in critical condition, suffering from an infected bed sore. Deraney said the deejay's health was declining on Friday. "If he opens his eyes, I want my Dad just once to see everyone standing around him, putting our differences aside and let him know how much he is loved by everyone, including Jean and Liberty," Kerri Kasem said in a statement. Kasem, most famous for his weekly top 40 countdown radio show and as the voice of Shaggy on the "Scooby-Doo" cartoons, suffers from Lewy body disease, a form of dementia with symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease and hallucinations. The legal battle between the deejay's family members escalated earlier in May when Kerri Kasem and her sister filed court papers saying that they did not know his whereabouts. Several days later, sheriff's deputies in Kitsap County located him and Jean Kasem there. Further proceedings in the case are scheduled for late June. (Reuters)

Alleged Brad Pitt Attacker Charged in LA

LOS ANGELES: Prosecutors announced charges Friday against a notorious Ukrainian prankster who allegedly punched Brad Pitt in the face at a Hollywood red carpet event this week. Vitalii Sediuk, who knocked Pitt's sunglasses off at the premiere of his wife Angelina Jolie's new film "Maleficent," faces charges of assault, battery and unlawful activity at and interference of a theatrical event. Prosecutors also want an order requiring the 25-year-old to stay away from entertainment industry events, on top of a five-day restraining order banning him from approaching Pitt, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said. Sediuk remains behind bars in lieu of paying $20,000 bail since he was arrested Wednesday after jumping over a barrier outside the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood and attacking the actor. He made contact with Pitt's face, knocking his sunglasses off, but neither the actor nor Jolie seemed fazed by the altercation. Sediuk is a Ukrainian TV journalist who has a reputation for celebrity-related gatecrashing and stunts. At this year's Cannes film festival, he burst onto the red carpet, threw himself to the ground and put his hands around "Ugly Betty" actress America Ferrera's ankles for a few seconds. Other targets of his affection have included Will Smith, Madonna, British singer Adele and Leonardo DiCaprio. In February 2013, he gatecrashed the Grammy music awards, going up on stage after presenter Jennifer Lopez read out Adele's name. That stunt landed him in jail overnight, according to The Hollywood Reporter. (AFP)

‘Maleficent’ Exposes Roots of Disney’s Wicked Witch

LOS ANGELES: The wicked witch who has haunted generations of children in Sleeping Beauty has been brought grippingly to life by Angelina Jolie, in a modern retelling seeking to humanize the fairytale she-devil. "Maleficent," released on Friday in the United States, amounts to a towering tribute to Jolie, who produces and stars in the film about the Disney witch with unlimited powers. With a haughty bearing, curved horns and razor-sharp cheekbones, the 38-year-old actress embodies in all its glory the character drawn by legendary animator Marc Davis in the original 1959 classic. "It was both a great pleasure and an extreme challenge to have such an extraordinary original. And we wanted to make sure we did justice to it," Jolie told a recent press conference in Paris. "I was scared of her, but I loved her. I was fascinated by her when I was a child, so I didn't want to do anything that would not be good enough for all the people that had responded to her over the years," she added. "Maleficent" aims to be both a retelling of the fairytale -- albeit taking several eyebrow-raising artistic liberties -- and an exploration of her past, to show what made her so cruel. "I think it's nice to use these stories that we are familiar with to try to touch on deeper and bigger themes," said Jolie. "She remains a villain, but there's just maybe more to her. I think it's an interesting message for children, because kids are drawn to dark things. They are drawn to things that scare them." She added: "The goal was not just to entertain children or retell the story. The goal was to try to see these deeper things of really understanding who somebody was, not judging them just by just what they seem to be." 'Why is she so bad?' Robert Stromberg, directing for the first time after winning two Oscars in art direction -- for "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland" -- agrees it would have been boring to make a film simply about a wicked witch. "We could have made a movie that was just evil sorceress, but it's very one-dimensional," he told AFP. "What we wanted to do is make the character more human in many ways. "So to me, the interesting part was to ask questions of why is she so bad, why is she so angry, where does she come from?" The filmmakers were aware however that the liberties they take with the story could prove distracting. To minimize this, they filled the film with references -- aesthetic, historical -- linking it directly to the Disney classic. Thus for example the scene where Princess Aurora is cursed to eternal sleep when she is christened follows astonishingly closely the equivalent scene from the 1959 animated film. "We had to have the christening scene, which is the center point of the film. We had to have that work. That iconic moment in the film is when we all recognize that this is the character that we all know and love from the Disney classic," said Stromberg. "We shot that scene word for word from the animated classic. And it was Angelina's idea." In the end, more than Maleficent herself, it is the men around her who are shown in a less than favorable light. The all-too-perfect Prince Phillip (played by Brenton Thwaites) and the cruel King Stefan (played by South African actor Sharlto Copley, from "District 9" and "Elysium") are lightweights compared to Jolie's magnificent Maleficent. "It's interesting because it does make you wonder about what the male role in society is," Copley told AFP. His own character "is a cautionary tale to a certain type of male behavior: dominance and ambition and greed. It's not only restricted to men, but by large a lot of that in the world is male dominated," he added.AFP

‘X-Men’ OverPowers ‘Godzilla’

LOS ANGELES: The "X-Men" mutant superheroes smashed into U.S. and Canadian theaters and collected $90.7 million in ticket sales through Sunday, keeping monster hit "Godzilla" at bay and heading toward a decisive win over a long holiday weekend. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" was expected to bring in $110 million by the end of the U.S. Memorial Day holiday on Monday, distributor 20th Century Fox said. The movie has already earned a global total of $261.8 million after opening at No. 1 in all 119 countries around the world. Last week's winner, monster movie remake "Godzilla", dropped to second place with $31.4 million through Sunday, according to estimates from box office tracking firm Rentrak. Its sales were projected to reach $39 million by Monday. Romantic comedy "Blended" claimed the No. 3 spot, taking in $14.2 million and on pace for about $17 million through Monday. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" is the seventh movie in the blockbuster Marvel Comics franchise about mutant superheroes. In the latest installment, Hugh Jackman's sharp-clawed Wolverine travels back in time to try and save the mutants from future destruction. To alter history, he is drawn into battle with the blue, shape-shifting Mystique, portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence in the $200 million film. The movie scored the fifth-biggest Memorial Day weekend opening in history, Rentrak said. "Godzilla," a remake of the classic 1954 Japanese monster movie, stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a naval officer who battles the rampaging beast. "The film is holding strong even with huge competition in the marketplace and will have just under $160 million in North America through Monday," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak. "Blended" reunites Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore as single parents who have a bad blind date, then find themselves staying at the same African resort with their kids. Rounding out the chart leaders, the Seth Rogen comedy "Neighbors" landed in fourth place with $13.9 million. Superhero sequel "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" was fifth with $7.8 million. "X-Men" was released by 20th Century Fox, a unit of Twenty-First Century Fox. "Godzilla" was produced by Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Warner Bros. also released "Blended." Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp, released "Neighbors." Sony Corp's movie studio distributed "Spider-Man 2." Reuters

Kim and Kanye Marry in Romantic Florence

LOS ANGELES: Curvy reality TV diva Kim Kardashian tied the knot with her rapper husband Kanye West in the Italian city of Florence on Saturday, Kardashian's publicist confirmed. "Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were married in a private ceremony in the presence of family and friends in Florence, Italy," publicist Ina Treciokas told AFP, giving no other details. Screaming fans were seen mobbing 16th-century Fort Belvedere in Florence on Saturday as hundreds of guests gathered for Kim and Kany's sumptuous wedding party, but it was not immediately publicly confirmed they had been officially married there, with some reports saying they may have been married earlier The couple was married by Rich Wilkerson Jr., a pastor at the non-denominational Trinity Church in Miami at the 16th century Forte di Belvedere in Florence, according to US celebrity media. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli sang "Con te Partiro" as 1970s US Olympic star Bruce Jenner -- Kim's stepfather -- walked the bride down the aisle, People magazine reported. Kim's mother Kris and sisters Khloe and Kourtney were at the event, as well as the couple's 11-month-old daughter North West, according to the E! network, which carries the reality TV show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians." Security at the event was tight, and guests were required to hand over their cell phones and any cameras, according to E! Guests at the "Kimye" wedding included Hollywood tennis star Serena Williams, actor Will Smith's son Jaden Smith, and "12 Years as a Slave" director Steve McQueen, according to celebrity media. "It was funny how nervous (Kanye) was," a person identified as an onlooker told People magazine. "He clearly knew the gravity of what he was about to do. This morning he was all smiles, but as it got closer, you could see that the nerves were kicking in." The wedding is the first for West, 36, and the third for Kardashian, 33. Kim and Kanye flew into Florence aboard private jets after kicking off their marathon wedding celebrations with a party in the Versailles palace late Friday. The marathon wedding event could earn the couple up to $21 million (15 million euros) thanks to sponsors and through the sale of exclusive photos of the ceremony, according to press reports. (AFP)

Movie Star Dog Has Its Day At Cannes

CANNES:A gentle Labrador mix named Body won the "Palm Dog" award on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, a pat on the head from canine-lovers and film critics for the outstanding movie performance by a pooch. Body starred in "Feher Isten" (White God) by Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo, which features more than 250 dogs. The lead character is "Hagen" - a role shared by Body and a second hound named Luc - who is abandoned by his family and picked up by a man who trains him to be fighting dog. At the film's festival premiere earlier in the festival, Body attended a photocall, walked the red carpet and was invited onstage - wearing a bowtie. The Palm Dog award is a play on the Palme d'Or, the Cannes festival's top prize. "What an honor, what a historical hound!" said Palm Dog organizer Toby Rose, who called the film a cross between "Inglorious Barksterds" and "Ben Fur." It had been a golden year for dogs on film, Rose said. "This Cannes has seen a raging outbreak of dog-risma," Rose said, citing Jean-Luc Godard's real-life dog, Roxy Mieville, who stars in his film "Adieu au Langage" (Goodbye to Language) and Yves Saint Laurent's French Bulldog Moujik in "Saint Laurent" by director Bertrand Bonello. The supporting role of Moujik takes a tragic turn as the dog consumes the party drugs intended for his master and dies. In another canine cameo, a fuzzy English sheepdog appears in David Cronenberg's critique of Hollywood, "Maps to the Stars" and is accidentally shot by a teenage movie star. "It was the biggest and best range of dog performances I think I've ever known," Rose told Reuters TV. But in terms of the number of canines on screen at any one time, "White God" takes the biscuit. In its opening scene, a pack of 250 barking dogs, none of them created by computer simulation, chase after the protagonist, barking and snarling. Most of the dogs used in the film were rescued in real life from an animal shelter, then adopted by cast members and friends after the shoot. Although Body was not on hand to accept the award, director Mundruczo accepted the stuffed bone prize on his behalf, saying it was an "uplifting" experience working with his canine stars. "They live in Los Angeles," he said of Body and Luc, promising to send the bone to their trainer.Reuters

‘X-Men’ Set To Soar At US Holiday Box Office

LOS ANGELES: The latest "X-Men" blockbuster is expected to take North America's box office by storm this weekend, as the mutant superhero gang reunites for one of the biggest US film-going holidays of the year. "X-Men: Days of Future Past," a time-bending movie that is already a hit with critics, could make up to $110 million over the extended Memorial Day weekend that runs through Monday -- the unofficial kick-off of the summer movie season. The film, in which Hugh Jackman's saber-knuckled Wolverine travels back in time to save the earth from a devastating war, could become one of the biggest grossing movies of all time, according to industry journal Variety. Review website Rotten Tomatoes gave it a huge 91 percent approval rating, saying it "combines the best elements of the series to produce a satisfyingly fast-paced outing that ranks among the franchise's finest installments." The star-studded cast -- including Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender and Halle Berry -- probably won't hurt the bottom line either. It features three Oscar-winning actresses -- Berry, Jennifer Lawrence and Anna Paquin -- and multiple Academy Award nominees including McKellen, Jackman and Fassbender. "The reviews have been great and we're confident that everyone, X-fans and non-X-fans, will see this movie and really like it," Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution at 20th Century Fox, told Variety. There was repeated applause at a special preview screening of the movie in Hollywood this week, ahead of its US release on Friday. It opened Thursday in many countries around the world. A big opening for "X-Men" would continue a solid run this year for films starring characters from the Marvel Comics universe. Sequel "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" led the North American box office for three weeks in April, and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" opened in the top spot earlier this month. Time-traveling Wolverine The high-adrenaline film features all the characters from the original trilogy (2000, 2003, 2006), but also includes both their older and younger selves, introduced in 2011's "X-Men: First Class." The action alternates between a dystopian 2023, when humans and mutants are both under attack by an army of super-powerful Sentinels leaving the world teetering on the brink of oblivion, and 1973. The mutants' father-figure teacher Professor X (played by Stewart) is forced to send Jackman's lupine character back to the 1970s to tamper with history to head off a cataclysmic war. Specifically, he has to stop Raven/Mystique -- the shape-shifting mutant played by Lawrence, in full blue body make-up and showing off all her curves -- from falling into human hands. That is because, with samples of her DNA, they created the Sentinel robot fighters. To do this, Wolverine has to find the younger versions of his mutant cohorts, including Quicksilver, who unfortunately is held captive in a vault under the middle of the Pentagon, for allegedly killing President John F. Kennedy. There is one particularly stylish -- and funny -- scene where Quicksilver uses his lightning-fast abilities to help them escape, which almost got a standing ovation in the preview screening theater. Without giving away the plot, the finale set in Washington will also probably delight anyone who likes a spectacle. Critics are happy. "Bryan Singer returns to blockbuster form," said the Variety review, referring to the director who made this and the first two X-Men movies, and who had to sit out promotion in recent weeks due to a sex assault lawsuit filed against him. "Singer has pulled together an ambitious, suspenseful screen chapter that secures a future for the franchise while facilitating continued reinvention," echoed the Hollywood Reporter. This weekend will tell if fans -- and studio heads -- will be happy too.AFP
